Modern life depends to an enormous extent on the use of the internet. The chances are that you’re sending and receiving data at least once every day – and some of us are active at just about every hour of the day. Whether you’re banking on the go, contributing remote work, chatting to your friends, or entertaining yourself with an online game, you’re dealing with the internet. And when you’re dealing with the internet, you’re exposing yourself to the threats that the internet can conceal. And if you haven’t developed the right digital habits, you could find yourself at increased risk.
Everyday Security Habits and What They Mean
A few everyday practices stand out as worthwhile. Changing your password regularly, and ensuring that no two passwords match, is essential. Perhaps the easiest way to do this is with the help of a password manager, which is a special piece of software that will compose and store passwords on your behalf. For certain applications and services, multi-factor authentication becomes critical. Keeping on top of your privacy settings, so you aren’t sharing more than you need to. It might also be worth familiarising yourself with essential tools, like Virtual Private Network.
If you’re unsure about the difference between online privacy tools, reading a guide on what is a VPN vs proxy can help clarify which option is right for your browsing habits. Building that awareness might take a little extra time, but in many cases, the effort is small compared with the security and privacy benefits.
The Influence of Technology on Our Behaviours
Our security routines might be disrupted, and improved, by the development of new applications and devices. Generally speaking, the more technology you’re using, and the more manufacturers and developers you bring into your home, the greater the risk. Polling suggests that younger people, as a whole, have a more permissive attitude when it comes to security and privacy. We’re increasingly willing to put our images online, and to submit our images to unknowable online entities in exchange for, say, a funny AI cartoon of ourselves.
Balancing Security and Lifestyle
Security can sometimes introduce friction into online interactions. If you’re shopping on an unfamiliar site, then you might find yourself jumping through additional hoops. This tends to give established players, like Amazon, a considerable advantage. There’s a balance to be struck between being informed and being overly cautious. You don’t need to overwhelm yourself with technical detail, but abiding by a few basic principles is always worthwhile. For example, never give your passwords out to people who contact you via email, WhatsApp, or phone.
What Today’s Habits Reveal About Our Digital Identity
The amount of trust we place in digital platforms suggests that we’re no longer all that concerned about privacy. But arguably, we should be. If you’re logging on to public WiFi, or making sensitive data public, or entrusting private data from your smart scales to some unknown server, then you’re exposing yourself – and it’s worth pausing to reflect on whether this is a worthwhile tradeoff.
