The Two-Day SSSTS Course: What You Need to Know

    SSSTS Course

SSSTS Course Moving into a supervisory role on a construction site is a big step. You go from being responsible for your own tools and tasks to being the person who looks after the safety of a whole team. It’s a lot of pressure, especially when you consider how much paperwork and legislation you need to stay on top of.

Most site supervisors start this transition by attending a specific training programme designed for their new level of responsibility. This training helps you bridge the gap between working on the tools and managing a safe site environment. You will learn how to actually implement them while keeping the project moving.

Before we begin, please note that every training provider will have different curriculums. This article should be taken as a general guide on what you will learn if you take the SSSTS course, not necessarily in this specific order.

SSSTS Course Legal Duties and Risk Management on Day One

The first day of the course usually focuses on the legal framework that governs construction in the UK. You will spend time looking at the Health and Safety at Work Act and how it applies to your daily tasks. Mainly, you will look at how the law holds supervisors accountable for what happens under their watch.

When you book an SSSTS training course, you’ll spend two days away from the site focusing on management skills. It’s important to remember that this is a CITB-approved course. The CITB is the industry training board for construction in Great Britain. It does not set the standards for how you install things on site, but it provides the framework for how you should manage the safety of those installations.

The afternoon of the first day is often reserved for the practicalities of risk assessments and method statements. You will learn how to identify hazards before they become accidents. Instead of just ticking boxes, you’ll learn how to write a method statement that actually keeps people safe. Most tutors will use real-world examples of site accidents to show why these documents are so important for a supervisor.

SSSTS Course Toolbox Talks and the Final Exam on Day Two

Day two moves into the more human side of site supervision. You will look at occupational health issues like noise, vibration and respiratory risks which are often overlooked compared to physical trips or falls. A large part of the morning will involve learning how to communicate with your team effectively. You’ll need to show you can pass on safety information effectively to your coworkers.

You will likely have to prepare and deliver a toolbox talk to the rest of the group. This is a practical exercise that tests whether you can take a safety topic and explain it in a way that workers will understand and follow. It’s worth pointing out that these sessions are usually where people find their confidence as a leader. You will get feedback on your delivery and how to handle questions from a potentially difficult team.

The course finishes with a written exam to test what you have learned over the two days. This assessment contains 25 questions, most of which are multiple choice, with a few requiring short written answers. The pass mark is 80%.

Please note that some of the questions are safety-critical, meaning you must answer them correctly to pass the course. If you have paid attention and taken part in the group discussions, you’ll find the exam is a straightforward way to prove you’re ready for the role.

    The Certificate Outcome and Validity

Once you pass the exam, you will receive a certificate that is valid for five years. This qualification is a standard requirement for supervisors on many major UK construction sites. It’s often the minimum level of training a principal contractor will accept before they let you lead a team. It shows that you understand your legal duties and have the skills to run a safe site.

There are a few key things to remember about your new qualification:

    • The certificate usually takes a few weeks to arrive after you complete the course.
    • You must take a one-day refresher course before your five-year certificate expires.
    • If you let the certificate expire, you’ll have to take the full two-day course again.
    • This qualification is a great stepping stone towards the five-day SMSTS course if you want to become a site manager later.

Having this certificate won’t just help you get onto more sites. It will also give you the peace of mind that you’re protecting your team and your employer from legal trouble. It’s a solid investment in your career that pays off through better job opportunities and a safer working environment for everyone involved.

    In a Nutshell

Taking the time to complete this training is a smart move for any aspiring supervisor. It gives you a clear understanding of the law and the practical tools to manage a site without constant stress. You’ll walk away with a much better idea of how to handle the daily challenges of site safety and how to lead your team with more authority.

By the end of the two days, you will be much better equipped to handle the paperwork and the people. You’ll know how to spot risks before they lead to injuries and how to keep your site compliant with modern standards. It’s the best way to make sure your transition into management is a successful one.
