6 UK Motor Insurance Providers and Brokers Worth Knowing

Motor insurance is one of those purchases people sometimes leave until a renewal reminder arrives. Rushing the decision can make it harder to compare the excesses, limits and optional benefits that determine how useful a policy will be if a vehicle is stolen, damaged or involved in an accident.

The six companies below serve different parts of the UK insurance market. They are not direct alternatives in every situation, but their different areas of expertise can help drivers and riders decide which type of provider suits their needs.

Best for Decades of Specialist Motorbike Knowledge – Carole Nash

Carole Nash is a specialist UK insurance broker that has been arranging motorbike cover since 1985. It works with a panel of motorcycle insurers and arranges policies for classic bikes, modern superbikes, custom-built models, touring bikes, scooters, mopeds and trikes.

This range may be useful for riders whose machines or circumstances do not fit neatly into a standard online quote. Someone commuting on a scooter may need different cover from a rider restoring a classic motorcycle or using a tourer for longer journeys. Customers can request a quote online or speak with the company’s motorcycle insurance team.

Carole Nash also arranges classic, standard and specialist car insurance, as well as van, motorhome, campervan and travel insurance. These are separate products and may be provided by different insurers, but the wider selection could be convenient for households with several insurance needs.

Best for Modified and Specialist Cars – Keith Michaels Insurance

Keith Michaels Insurance is a specialist car insurance broker with more than 35 years of experience. Its services are designed for vehicles and drivers whose circumstances may not fit comfortably within a standard car insurance application.

The broker arranges cover for performance, prestige, modified, imported, classic and high-value cars. It also provides specialist options for expatriates, convicted drivers and business users. Customers can discuss their individual circumstances directly, which may be helpful when explaining modifications, unusual vehicle use or a complicated driving history.

Keith Michaels focuses on specialist cars rather than motorbikes. It is therefore a relevant option for owners of modified or unusual cars, but riders seeking motorcycle insurance would need to approach a dedicated bike broker or insurer.

Best for Straightforward Car and Van Cover – Autonet Insurance

Autonet Insurance is an insurance broker offering car, van, business and landlord insurance. It works with insurer partners to arrange cover rather than underwriting every policy itself.

Its car and van products can include features such as a 24-hour claims helpline, with additional benefits depending on the selected policy. Some enhanced options include motor legal expenses protection, breakdown assistance and a courtesy vehicle, although customers should check the relevant policy documents for limits and exclusions.

Autonet is most relevant to car owners, van drivers, landlords and businesses rather than motorcycle riders. Its online quote process may appeal to customers looking for relatively straightforward car or van cover, but the final price and benefits will depend on the insurer and policy selected.

Best for Managing Eligible Insurance and Financial Products Online – Aviva

Aviva offers a broad selection of insurance and financial products, including car, multi-car, van, home, travel and health insurance, as well as savings, investments and pensions. Its scale and product range make it different from a broker focused on a single type of vehicle.

Customers can manage eligible products through MyAviva, although availability and account functionality vary by product. Aviva also offers health insurance with access to certain digital healthcare services, but these benefits relate to eligible health policies and are not automatically included with motor insurance.

Aviva’s main consumer motor range focuses on cars and vans rather than motorcycles. It may suit customers who want to manage several eligible insurance or financial products through one provider, but riders seeking motorcycle-specific expertise should consider a dedicated motorcycle broker.

Best for Car Insurance and Long-Term Financial Products – LV=

LV= is a recognised UK brand offering car, home, pet and travel insurance alongside life insurance, income protection, investments, pensions and retirement products. Different parts of its product range may be provided or administered by separate companies, so customers should check who underwrites each policy.

Its breadth may appeal to someone who wants to explore everyday insurance and long-term financial products under the same brand. However, holding several LV= products does not necessarily mean they will form one combined policy or qualify for an automatic discount.

LV= provides support for existing motorbike insurance customers, but motorcycle cover is not as prominently promoted as its car insurance. Riders looking for a new policy should confirm current availability directly before treating it as a motorcycle insurance option.

Best for Broad Personal and Business Insurance – AXA UK

AXA UK offers personal and commercial insurance across areas including cars, vans, homes, health, landlords and businesses. Its motor range includes standard car, multi-car, electric car, personal van and courier van insurance.

Depending on the product selected, optional or included features may cover areas such as breakdown assistance, legal protection, courtesy cars and personal injury. Customers should compare the details carefully because benefits, excesses and exclusions vary between policies.

AXA UK does not prominently advertise direct motorcycle insurance through its main consumer website. It is therefore more relevant to car and van drivers or customers seeking broader personal and business cover than to riders looking for a dedicated motorbike policy.

What to Weigh Up Before Choosing a Policy

Price is usually the first figure people compare, but it should not be the only consideration. A lower premium may come with a higher excess, narrower cover or fewer included benefits, which can affect the policy’s overall value when a claim occurs.

Start with the type of vehicle being insured. A commuter motorcycle, touring bike, restored classic, modified performance car and work van all present different risks. Look for a provider that regularly deals with your type of vehicle and ask how modifications, mileage, storage and intended use affect the cover.

Check which benefits are included as standard and which cost extra. Breakdown assistance, legal expenses protection, courtesy vehicles, European use and agreed-value cover can vary considerably between providers. Review the policy wording rather than assuming that similar product names provide identical protection.

It is also important to distinguish between a broker and an insurer. A broker arranges a policy through an insurer, while the insurer underwrites the risk and normally pays valid claims. Ask who the underlying insurer is, who will manage a claim and whether the broker provides additional claims support.

Using one brand for several products may simplify administration, but the policies could still have different underwriters, renewal dates and online systems. Any multi-product discount should be confirmed rather than assumed.

Finally, consider how the vehicle is used. A weekend classic owner will have different priorities from someone commuting daily or operating a van for business. Accurate information about mileage, storage, modifications and use is essential because incorrect details could affect the policy or a future claim.

Which One Is Right for You?

These companies serve different types of customers. Autonet focuses on car, van, business and landlord insurance, while Keith Michaels specialises in modified, imported, performance and other non-standard cars. Aviva, LV= and AXA provide broader personal, motor or financial products for customers who value scale and convenience.

For motorcycle riders, Carole Nash is the most directly relevant provider in this group. It has arranged motorbike cover since 1985 and works with a panel of motorcycle insurers across a wide range of bike types. However, the most suitable policy will still depend on the motorcycle, how it is used, the cover required and the terms offered by the underlying insurer.

Before choosing any provider, compare the premium, compulsory and voluntary excesses, coverage limits, exclusions, included benefits and claims process. The right option is the one that fits the vehicle and how it is used, not simply the company offering the lowest initial quote.
