Old style advice sometimes claims that double-breasted tailoring belongs only on tall or slim men. That view overlooks the effect of modern cuts and careful alterations. The overlapping front creates a strong horizontal line, but lapel width, jacket length, button position and trouser shape all influence the result. Men of many builds can wear the style well when those elements work together.
The useful question is not whether your body is permitted to wear a particular jacket. It is whether the jacket fits your shoulders, closes cleanly and creates balanced proportions. A generous classic cut and a close modern cut will look very different even when their chest labels are identical. Try the suit as a complete outfit and judge the whole outline.

Wear the fastening correctly
A double-breasted jacket is generally worn fastened while standing because the open fronts can hang untidily. Use the intended outer button and the internal anchor button, which stops the underlap from dropping. Unfasten the jacket when sitting to reduce strain, then close it again after standing. Do not use every visible button unless the construction specifically requires it.
Before the first event, practise fastening the jacket and check that the internal button is secure. Empty heavy outer pockets, which can pull the front out of line. With the main proportions settled and a few sensible alterations, the style looks assured rather than imposing. The result comes from fit, not from following rules about height or build.
