Galaxy Z Fold8 Is Here – Should Fold5 Owners Cash Out Before the Next Resale Drop?

Samsung’s newest foldables are now official. The Galaxy Z Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and Flip8 were unveiled in July, bringing another round of thinner hardware, AI features and fresh reasons for foldable fans to consider upgrading. For owners of a Galaxy Z Fold5, however, the more interesting question may be what the launch does to the value of the device they already own.

The Fold8 changes the reference point

Samsung’s UK launch announcement positions the Fold8 generation around a broader choice of foldable form factors, upgraded AI features and easier device switching. Every new Fold generation also resets consumer expectations about what a premium foldable should look and feel like.

That matters in the second-hand market. A Fold5 remains a powerful phone, but shoppers comparing used foldables now have newer alternatives above it. The result is a familiar pattern: older generations become more price-sensitive as the market moves on.

Foldables have a different resale problem

Foldables are expensive when new, but they also carry condition risks that slab phones do not. The hinge, inner display and protective layers all matter to buyers and recyclers. Two Fold5 handsets that look similar from the outside can receive very different offers if one has display damage, hinge issues or heavy wear.

SellMyPhone’s comparison data showed a best offer of around £336 for a Galaxy Z Fold5 at the time of writing. If the Fold8 has made you think, “perhaps I should sell my Galaxy Z Fold5 and move up,” the first step is to find out what your exact condition and storage option are worth before assuming Samsung’s own trade-in is the only route.

    Should you sell immediately?

Not automatically. If the Fold5 still works perfectly and the Fold8 upgrades do not change how you use the phone, keeping it is often the cheapest choice. You avoid a large purchase and continue extracting value from a device you already own.

But if you were going to upgrade anyway, there is a good argument for checking resale prices sooner rather than later. New generations tend to push older devices one step further down the market, and foldables can depreciate quickly because buyers price in both age and durability concerns.

Three questions before moving to Fold8

    ·         Does the new form factor solve a real problem you have with the Fold5?

    ·         Will the new AI and multitasking features change your everyday use, or mostly look good in demonstrations?

    ·         After selling the Fold5, how much cash will you actually have to add?

Compare the net cost, not the launch hype

The useful number is the same for every upgrade: new phone price minus current phone resale value. This is especially important with foldables because the retail prices are high enough that a few hundred pounds of resale value materially changes the decision.

A comparison service such as SellMyPhone.co.uk lets owners see offers from multiple UK recyclers rather than treating a manufacturer’s trade-in figure as the market price.

The Fold8 may be Samsung’s most polished foldable yet. That does not mean every Fold5 owner needs it. But if you already know you want one, the Fold5’s resale value deserves to be checked before another year of depreciation and another generation of used foldables hits the market.
