What a Commercial Energy Comparison Actually Involves

Energy has moved from a quiet overhead to one of the most watched costs on a business’s books. After years of volatility, owners and finance teams want certainty, and the most reliable way to get it is a proper commercial energy comparison. Yet many businesses still picture comparison as the quick postcode-and-click exercise they know from home energy, when the commercial version works quite differently and rewards a more considered approach.

Why Commercial Energy Is Not Like Home Energy

The first thing to understand is that business energy has no price cap. Household customers are shielded by a cap, but businesses are fully exposed to the market, which makes the rate you negotiate far more consequential. Contracts are also fixed-term and generally cannot be exited early, and if one lapses the business is moved onto out-of-contract rates that are among the most expensive available. The stakes of getting the comparison right are simply higher.

Pricing is also more individual. A supplier’s quote depends on your consumption volume, your meter type, your location, your credit profile and the contract length you choose. Because every supplier weighs these differently, the same business can receive very different quotes, which is exactly why comparing the whole market matters.

    Electricity and Gas, Together

A thorough commercial energy comparison usually covers both electricity and gas, since most businesses buy both and the savings compound across the two. Looking at the whole market for each, based on your actual usage, reveals what every supplier would charge for your specific profile rather than just what your current provider offers at renewal. Suppliers price renewals and default rates on the assumption that customers will not check, so the gap between those and a freshly compared rate is often substantial.

Comparing both fuels at once also simplifies administration. Aligning contract end dates and, where possible, consolidating supply can make future reviews easier and give you more leverage as a single, larger customer.

    How the Comparison Works

A meaningful comparison starts with a recent bill, which shows your consumption, your meter details and your current rates. From there, the comparison matches your usage profile against the market and surfaces the strongest options. It weighs the unit rate against the standing charge, because the cheapest-looking unit price can be poor value once the fixed daily charge is factored in, and it considers contract length against where wholesale prices currently sit.

Larger sites with half-hourly metering have more complex consumption patterns, and a good comparison accounts for those peaks and troughs rather than treating usage as a flat figure. The more accurately the comparison reflects how and when you actually use energy, the more reliable the result.

Timing Turns a Good Comparison Into a Great One

Because energy prices track the wholesale market and move daily, timing matters as much as the comparison itself. Suppliers let businesses lock in a new contract months before the current one ends, sometimes up to a year ahead. Comparing early, around three to six months before renewal, gives the widest choice and the best chance of securing a favourable rate rather than being forced to accept whatever is available at the last minute. Leaving it late risks a lapse onto those expensive default rates.

The practical habit is simple: note your contract end date and begin the comparison well ahead of it, treating renewal as a planned decision rather than a surprise.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a price cap on commercial energy?
No. The cap applies only to household energy. Businesses are fully exposed to the market, which is why comparing and timing your contract matters so much more.

Should I compare electricity and gas together?
Usually yes. Most businesses buy both, the savings compound across the two, and aligning contracts simplifies future reviews and administration.

What do I need to run a comparison?
A recent energy bill, which shows your consumption, meter details and current rates. Accurate usage data produces an accurate comparison.

Should I pick the lowest unit rate?
Not on its own. Weigh the unit rate against the standing charge and your usage, and consider the contract length against where wholesale prices sit. The lowest headline rate is not always the best value.

    When should I compare?
Three to six months before your contract ends. Suppliers let you lock in a deal in advance, so comparing early gives the most choice and better timing on wholesale prices.
