MacBook Air or MacBook Pro? How to Choose in 2026

On 25 October 2026, Apple’s UK Mac page lists three laptops: the MacBook Neo, the MacBook Air in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, and the MacBook Pro in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes. The starting prices on apple.com/uk are £699, £1,299 and £1,999. That is a wide gap, and most buyers ask the same thing: is the Air enough, or is the Pro worth £700 more?

The answer depends less on the chip name and more on what you do every day. Below, we compare the models using Apple’s UK specifications, then cover student pricing, AppleCare and your rights.

Independent sellers often carry earlier generations alongside current ones, which helps if your budget sits between two models. One such catalogue is the MacBook range at AppleBitcoin, which runs from M1 to M5 Air and Pro models and labels its open-box units clearly. AppleBitcoin is an independent UK reseller with no affiliation to Apple.

What the 2026 line-up looks like

The 13-inch MacBook Air starts with Apple’s M5 chip (10-core CPU, 8-core GPU), 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD. It weighs 1.23 kg, has two Thunderbolt 4 ports plus MagSafe, and Apple quotes up to 18 hours of video streaming. The 15-inch Air starts at £1,499 and weighs 1.51 kg.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro starts with an M5 chip with a 10-core GPU, 16GB of memory, a 1TB SSD and a very different screen. It also moves up to M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, with memory options reaching 128GB on the top M5 Max. The M5 Pro 14-inch starts at £2,499, and the 16-inch at £2,999.

One detail is easy to miss: Apple’s UK tech specs list “Power adapter sold separately” in the box for the Neo, the Air and the Pro. Budget for a charger if you lack a suitable USB-C one.

When the MacBook Air is the right call

For writing, email, spreadsheets, browsing, video calls and light photo editing, the Air is more than capable. The main reasons to stop at the Air are weight and price. At 1.23 kg, the 13-inch model is lighter than the 1.55 kg 14-inch Pro. If you need more headroom, Apple lets you configure the Air with up to 32GB of memory and 4TB of storage.

When the MacBook Pro earns its price

The Pro makes sense for heavy, sustained work: long video exports, 3D, large code builds or local AI models. The extra GPU cores and memory on the M5 Pro and M5 Max are built for that.

The screen is the other big difference. The 14-inch Pro has a Liquid Retina XDR display with up to 1,000 nits sustained full-screen brightness, 1,600 nits peak for HDR content and ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz. The Air’s display is rated at 500 nits. That matters if you edit HDR video or photos.

Ports matter too. The Pro adds an HDMI port, an SDXC card slot and a third Thunderbolt port, and Apple quotes up to 24 hours of video streaming on the base M5 model. If you use projectors or camera cards every week, those ports save a bag of adapters.

Do not overlook the MacBook Neo

The MacBook Neo is the new entry point. It runs on Apple’s A18 Pro chip with 8GB of memory, with no option to add more, and comes with 256GB or 512GB of storage. It has one USB 3 port, one USB 2 port and supports a single external display.

Check the keyboard spec before you buy: Apple lists Touch ID only on the 512GB Neo, not on the 256GB model. For a first laptop or light second machine, the Neo is sensible. For creative or long-term use, the Air is the safer step up.

    Students: check education pricing first

Apple’s UK Education Store lists the MacBook Neo from £599, the MacBook Air from £1,199 and the MacBook Pro from £1,899 for eligible university students and educators. Apple says you may need to verify your eligibility with an active university email or other documents at checkout. Apple also takes up to 10% off AppleCare+ for Mac for the same group.

Ask your department what software your course uses. Film or design work may justify a Pro, while most essay-based degrees run happily on an Air.

Warranty, AppleCare and your UK rights

Every new MacBook comes with Apple’s one-year limited warranty and 90 days of complimentary technical support. AppleCare+ adds unlimited repairs for accidental damage, subject to an excess fee, plus battery replacements and priority support. Apple’s newer AppleCare One plan starts at £16.99 a month and covers up to three products.

These plans sit on top of your statutory rights, not in place of them. Under section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015, you have a short-term right to reject faulty goods for a full refund within 30 days, and Which? explains that after 30 days and up to six months, the retailer gets one chance to repair or replace the item first. Separately, GOV.UK says online buyers can cancel within 14 days of receiving an item, even when nothing is wrong with it.

Independent sellers also publish their own policies, so read them before you order. Read AppleBitcoin’s delivery and returns terms and you will find free insured, tracked delivery that usually takes two to four days, 30 days to send back unopened items, and a replacement or full refund if a device turns up faulty or damaged.

    Final thoughts

For most people, the MacBook Air is the right MacBook in 2026. It is light and fast enough for nearly everything. Choose the Pro if you need its brighter screen, extra ports or the memory headroom of the M5 Pro and M5 Max. Students should check the Neo and education prices first. Whichever you pick, check the spec sheet, the seller’s return policy and your Consumer Rights Act protections before you pay.
