Which Home Electrical Jobs Can You Do Yourself, and Which Need a Professional?

    Electrical Jobs

Plenty of homeowners are handy with a drill and a spirit level. Electrics are a different matter, and the line between a sensible weekend job and one that needs a qualified electrician is not always obvious.

This guide sets out where that line usually sits in England and Wales, why it exists, and how bigger projects such as adding a charging point for an electric car fit into the picture.

Why Electrical Work Is Treated Differently

Most home improvement mistakes are visible. A badly hung shelf sags, and a poor paint job looks patchy. Electrical faults can stay hidden behind plaster for years before they cause a shock or a fire.

That is the reason Part P of the Building Regulations exists. It covers electrical safety in dwellings and sets out which jobs are “notifiable”, meaning they must either be carried out by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme or reported to local building control before work starts.

    Jobs Most Homeowners Can Handle

Some small tasks are generally treated as non-notifiable, provided they are done competently and safely. Typical examples include:

    • Replacing a damaged socket outlet, switch or ceiling rose like for like on an existing circuit
    • Swapping a light fitting for a new one in the same position
    • Replacing the flex on an appliance or changing a plug fuse

Even with these jobs, the circuit must be isolated at the consumer unit and checked as dead before anything is touched. If you are not confident testing a circuit, the job is not a DIY job for you, however simple it looks.

Jobs That Need a Registered Electrician

The picture changes once a project adds something new to the installation. Installing a new circuit, replacing a consumer unit, or carrying out certain work in bathrooms and other special locations is notifiable under Part P.

Larger projects tend to bring technical decisions that are easy to get wrong. An electrician will look at cable sizing, where the cross sectional area of the conductor has to suit both the load and the length of the run. Over longer distances, voltage drop becomes a real consideration, and outdoor runs often call for armoured cable or another suitably protected route.

Getting these details right is what keeps a circuit cool, protected and compliant for decades. It is also why a certificate matters when you come to sell the house.

Where Electric Car Charging Fits In

More households are switching to electric vehicles, and many owners want to know whether they can fit a home EV charger themselves to save on the installation bill. It is an understandable question, given how simple the wall unit looks once it is up.

In practice, an EV charging point needs its own dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, which makes it notifiable work. If you are weighing it up, it helps to read up on the rules on fitting a home EV charger yourself, ideally before buying any hardware, because the cost of putting a faulty job right can easily exceed what you hoped to save.

There are other reasons a qualified installer is involved. The local network operator usually needs to be told about the new load, and the earthing arrangement for an outdoor charger needs careful assessment. Some homes also need changes near the meter box, or an additional consumer unit, before a charger can be connected safely.

Chargers sold in Great Britain must now include smart functionality, so set-up usually includes connecting the unit to an app and choosing when it should charge. A good installer will walk you through this at handover.

    Planning Bigger Upgrades Together

If you are already thinking about one large electrical project, it is worth listing any others you may want in the next few years. Combining jobs often means fewer visits, less disruption and a better overall design.

    Common pairings include:

    • Upgrading an older consumer unit at the same time as adding a charger installation
    • Running a spare cable or duct to the driveway while the garden is already dug up
    • Considering solar PV alongside an EV charger, so both can be sized with the household’s total demand in mind

An electrician can check whether your supply and existing wiring can cope with the extra load before you commit. That conversation costs little and can prevent an expensive surprise later.

How to Choose the Right Electrician

Look for an electrician registered with a recognised competent person scheme, as they can self-certify notifiable work and notify building control on your behalf. Ask what certificates you will receive at the end of the job, and keep them with your property documents.

For EV work in particular, ask whether the installer has experience with the charger model you are considering. Clear written quotes that list any likely extras, such as longer cable runs or groundwork, make it easier to compare like with like.

    Final Thoughts

There is nothing wrong with tackling small, like-for-like electrical repairs if you are confident and careful. Anything that adds a circuit, changes the consumer unit or involves outdoor supplies belongs with a registered professional.

Treat that boundary as a sensible safeguard for your home and family. Spending a little more on proper installation buys years of safe, reliable use and paperwork that stands up when you sell.
